Journey Behind the Falls
After breakfast Monday morning in Niagara, we headed straight to the Canadian side of the falls again so we could journey behind the falls. We got in line for our disposable raincoats and ventured out to explore 650 feet a third of the way across the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
We explored several tunnels that led us behind the falls. The tunnels were blasted in 1944. Zachary decided to be ornery this day, by not wearing his raincoat (this became a trend all day).
The observation deck sits just 25 feet above river level and provides a full view of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls -- and a wonderful opportunity to get soaked! The Maid of the Mist boat passed behind us with its boatload of visitors heading into the Maid of the Mist Pool at the base of the falls.
Niagara carries 20% of the world’s fresh water, flowing from four of the Great Lakes. Traveling at 40 mph, the water’s speed and huge volume had immense erosive power. We definitely got wet from all the mist and spray from the force of the water rushing over the falls.
You can see the observation deck to the right of the falls here -- from our Maid of the Mist boat tour into the falls.
