Patriotic Duty

When Dad built his retirement home, he included one feature that any proud veteran has: a flagpole from which to fly Old Glory. Each day we were there, Zachary and MacKenzie took turns helping him raise and lower the flag. They even knew how to correctly bring it to half-staff in honor of Lady Bird Johnson’s passing, and how to fold it after bringing it down at the end of the day.

They actually had to come up with a simple schedule so neither of them would have more opportunity to help Papa than the other. Benjamin even got into the action once -- probably because he saw that Zachary and MacKenzie enjoyed helping Papa so much.

It did my heart good to see how proud they each were to help with this patriotic task. I think they were equally as proud of their responsibilities.
